Day 115 - Friday

U.S. History I - Periods 2, 5, and 6: 
Essential Question:
-Does state or federal government have a greater impact in our lives?
-How has American's justified Manifest Destiny?
-Does the United States have a mission to expand democracy and freedom?
-Why did Americans feel so compelled to expand the country westward?
-What might 19th century Native Americans have said about Manifest Destiny? 
-How might the country have developed differently if no gold or other precious minerals had been discovered in the West?
-Does war cause national prosperity?
-Is economic, social, or physical coercion an effective method of achieving our national interest in domestic affairs

1. Today is your last day to prepare in-class for the Opening Statements and Direct Questioning of your witnesses. Please prepare for either the Defense of Andrew Jackson or the Prosecution of Andrew Jackson using the "Student Information Sheets" AND REMEMBER TO POST THE DOCUMENTS YOU WILL BE USING by name/topic and the link.  Your team needs to be ORGANIZED and MANAGE the project working together to complete the goal.

-Andrew Jackson Trial - Look at the Prosecution side and then the Defense Side  I will give you a similar trial sheet, but we will be looking at a total of TWO CHARGES against Andrew Jackson - each class will decide which TWO CHARGES they want to pick.  Please do NOT bombard me with questions, just read it over, write down any questions you have, and try to understand what the trial is about, who you might want to be (Defense Lawyer, Prosecution Lawyer, A Witness and we will assign roles on Tuesday).
-You have access to a Google Folder that your class will operate in for the preparation of the trial, so please get to work.

2. Be prepared to play your role-player (Lawyers and Witness) parts with expertise, professionalism, and make this trial come alive in class.

Homework:
1. This weekend you need to prepare for your court room proceedings of OPENING STATEMENT AND DIRECT WITNESS questioning.  Opening statements SHOULD BE PERSUASIVE, FACTUAL, and arguing your position with complete confidence. This weekend you should be preparing questions for your the witnesses you want to make look good on your team. Additionally, you should be preparing arguments for your opening statement that are based on the documents you have posted on the "Student Information Sheets". The idea is that you become crafty at figuring out HOW TO DEFEND or ATTACK Andrew Jackson's actions and words using the US Constitution as your blueprint for what the President of the U.S.A can and cannot do. Your team needs to be really organized to be successful for Monday's Opening Statements and Direct Questioning.

2. Look at all the resources and decide quickly if they help the Prosecution side or the the Defense Side.  I have shared with you a ton of resources over the last 24 hours on the Google Folder for your class, now you need to work through becoming experts, designing effective questions, and preparing to be the BEST witness or lawyer you can be. This is hard and you will gain a valuable experience here turning our classroom into a courtroom.

U.S. HISTORY II - Period 1:
Essential Questions:
-Why was it important for Americans to remember D-Day?
-How did D-Day change the course of the war, and potentially the course of history?
-In what ways did the U.S. decision to join WWII impact the European Theater or battle?

1. Students will have 15 minutes to work on the Student Essay Contest - 2016 "Dear Mr. Thompson..." OR the Atomic Bomb DBQ's: A persuasive essayHere is a GOOGLE Spreadsheet on who is doing what.

2. The rest of the period on Friday, we will continue to review a D-Day victory newsreel clip, and the Discovery of Nazi Death Camps from the Band of Brothers Episode.  If time permits, we will begin working on the Pacific Theater slideshow and conduct whole-classroom discussions on the major themes/events that define these theaters of war in WWII.

Homework:
1. Please make sure you are have completed your 2ND DRAFT OF editing and revising your ESSAY on a google doc to the folder titled "Essay Contest of Atomic Bomb 2016" displaying that you have completed the essay to the best of your ability for FINAL SUBMISSION ON MONDAY!

2. Download The Atomic Bomb Instructions and background and the Atomic Bomb DBQ's: A persuasive debate .  Please read, highlight, and prepare an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper outline to prepare for the Atomic Bomb Debate on Wednesday, March 16th. I will set up a Google Document for you all to access resources and to share the debate format for you all.  Your debate on the Atomic Bomb will count as a Project Grade.

International Studies - Period 7
Essential Questions:
1. Does NATO have a new role in the order of international relations in Europe and the World in the    21st Century?
2. Was NATO just or unjust in participating and executing their mission in your post-Cold War scenario?
3. Is the world safer today with the United Nations than it was in 1945?
4. Is the United Nations an effective peace-keeping organization?
5. What should be done to improve the effectiveness of the United Nations?

1  Here is the updated spreadsheet of when you all are going.  Great job to the Somalian group and Mediterranean presenters yesterday!!! Bosnia & Herzegovina, Lebanon, and NATO Afghanistan groups should be ready to PRESENT TODAY.

-An impressive viewing of MANY UN Peacekeeping videos - Nearly 5 hours worth of short clips from many Peacekeeping Operations.
Homework:
1. Please check out the sign-up sheet here on the Google Document so YOU KNOW EXACTLY when you are presenting your mission - We have Kuwait, UN Polarization, and Haiti going on Monday.

2. You MUST have the following in your Google Folder:
-You must have a basic outline in your Google Folder
A works cited page that is ongoing and will be finalized up to Chicago-Style Format standards
-Your final project (with a final link so that we can click on it and it will take us to your project (Prezi, Google Slides, You tube channels, and Digital Stories all have links!!!)

3. Your working outline should include the items below:
-Who is involved in your mission?
-How long have they been there?
-Why Peacekeepers or NATO troops are there?
-A DEBATABLE/CONTROVERSIAL thesis statement!
-Where and what did the situation look like that caused peacekeepers or NATO troops to be engaged in the situation?
-What does the current situation look like? In other words, how effective was the Peacekeeper or NATO situation?
-What challenges did/do Peacekeepers or NATO troops face?
