Day 75 - Monday and a New Year

Happy 2016 and a New Year!!!


U.S. History I - Periods 2, 5, and 6: 
Essential Question:
-What does it mean to be an "American"?
-What are the rights, liberties, and responsibilities of U.S. citizens?
-Is the U.S. Constitution a living document? If so, how is it a living document?
-Does our state government or federal government have a greater impact in our lives?
-Do separation of powers and checks and balances make our government work too slowly?

Themes: Republicanism, US Constitution, Bill of Rights, Articles, Liberties, Citizenship, Checks and Balance, Separation of Powers, digital story-telling, writing out scripts.

1.  A digital story on the U.S. Constitution is due TODAY and we will watch in the following order

Article II
Article III
Articles IV - VII (except period 6)
Amendments 1-4
Amendments 5-10
Amendments 11-19
Amendments 20-27

Homework:
1. Please download The George Washington Packet. Using the The George Washington Packet, please read, highlight, and build a resume on George Washington listing his education, experience, and qualified skills to be the 1st President of the U.S.A.

2. Due by Wednesday - Please read Chapter 6 - Section 1 - George Washington Heads the New Government -pages 182-187 and complete the terms and names on PAGE 7 of The George Washington Packet.

3. Pages 7-End of the Packet are DUE by Thursday, January 7th

U.S. HISTORY II - Period 1:

Essential Questions:
-Who was Herbert Hoover and how did his leadership affect the American people during the Great Depression?
-How did the Great Depression affect the lives of millions of Americans?
-What affect did the Dust Bowl have on Americans during the Great Depression?
-What was the New Deal and how did it affect the American people during the Great Depression?
-What affect did the Stock Market Crash of 1929 have on the American people during the Great Depression?
-What were the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), The Works Progress Administration (WPA), and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and how did the affect the American people during the Great Depression?
-Who was Franklin Delano Roosevelt and how did his leadership affect the American people during the Great Depression?

On Wednesday before the break you were asked to pick ONE theme that you REALLY want to learn more about.  Once you pick that ONE topic, do some basic research using Chapter 22 AND Digital History and produce a PIE paragraph on your subject - It should include a STRONG THESIS STATEMENT and at least 6 sentences that have supportive and credible evidence to support your thesis statement. Let's talk about how that went down from Mr. Parkin's perspective

1. Please read The Great Depression: A Struggle to Survive and then highlight the most important aspects that highlight the main points and write them in the margins.  I am looking for what you might include on a 2-column chart LEFT-HAND SIDE so it should not be one-worded main ideas, but more like mini-thesis's statements.  Once you have completed the Main Idea concepts in the margins, then complete questions 1-3 on the last page.

2. Your NEW project will be reviewed this week and executed later this week - Review of the expectations of the Digital Storytelling Project and the Digital Storytelling Rubric.

Essential Questions:
1. What does "hard power" and "soft power" capability and how does it impact foreign policy?
2. Should Europe and the United States accept more refugees from the Middle East and Africa? 

Themes: Humanitarianism, World Peace, War vs. Peace, Sustainable Change, Non-Government Organizations

1. We will finish (27:35) watching A PBS special titled "The Road to 9/11" when you get back from the break, so the questions on The Road to 9/11 Handout with key terms and questions will not be due until Monday, January 4th. Get started on your region study for Terrorism and National Security.

2. From the article on "Why Are They So Angry with Us?" let's review your summaries and was there anything that you want to highlight or discuss from this article?

3. Going back to 1948 and the creation of Israel. The last 67 years have really escalated the anger the Middle East has toward The West. Use this slideshow to help build an understanding of this turning point in the 20th Century conflict.
