Day 130 - Monday

U.S. History I - Periods 1, 5, and 6: 

Essential Questions:
-Does state or federal government have a greater impact in our lives?
-Does the United States have a mission to expand democracy and freedom?
-What might 19th century Native Americans have said about Manifest Destiny? 
-How might the country have developed differently if no gold or other precious minerals had been discovered in the West?
-Does war cause national prosperity?
-Is economic, social, or physical coercion an effective method of achieving our national interest in domestic affairs

Themes: State Rights vs. Federal Government, Fugitive Slave Act, Clay's Compromise of 1850 (terms), Popular Sovereignty, Calhoun Goals/Webster's Goals, response to the compromise, Stephen Douglas and Millard Fillmore's views on slavery.

1. Your ESSAY from Slavery and it's Defenders on the essential question"What were the major arguments employed during the antebellum years by Southern supporters of slavery to defend slavery and its continuation?" will be graded through the course of the week and will count for Quarter 3.  

2. How did the Homework on starting Chapter 10 - pages 302-309 - Outlining the differences between the North and South, Slavery in Territories and the Wilmot Proviso Concerns, California sparks the Senate Debates, the idea of Popular Sovereignty. 

3. We will highlight and review portions of the Antebellum South Slideshow

Homework:
1. Please read Chapter 10 - Section 2 - Protest, Resistance, and Violence pages 310-317 and outline each Blue Section with developed CAUSE-AND-EFFECT ANALYSIS and the major people, concepts, and IMPACTS of these sectionalism differences.

U.S. HISTORY II - Period 4:

Essential Questions:
- Who is responsible for starting the Cold War?
-Why didn't the Cold War ever turn "hot"?
-How did the Cold War challenge American values, at home and abroad?
-Is the Cold War still going on? How?
-Should Americans and the U.S. government have feared an internal Communist subversion in the 1950's?

Themes: Containment, Domino Theory, CIA covert missions, Iran Overthrow, The Space Race, U-2 incident

1. I will pass back your Big Silent Paper Debates/Conversations from last week.  We will review and assess what are the positive outcomes of this activity and your results. I am also CHECKING BINDERS TODAY - We never got to this on Friday!

2. Please go and RESEARCH any aspect of President John F. Kennedy's Presidency - Foreign policy, domestic laws, The New Frontier, Civil Rights, The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Bay of Pigs, The Kennedy Assassination - it does not matter what topic you choose as long as it's about John F. Kennedy's presidency.  You MUST have 3 SOURCES (2 Online and 1 Database/Print) and create an annotated bibliography of three to five sentences.  Based off your research, you must also come up with a STRONG and DEBATABLE thesis statement. Trust me this is practice for a much larger project later this quarter.
