Day 11 - Happy Tacky Tuesday!

U.S. History I - Periods 1, 5, and 6: 

Essential Questions:

-What is historical thinking?
-How did early American settlements influence democracy during colonial life?
-How was the first permanent English settlement in North America established in 1607? 
-What influence did geography play in the settlement?

Essential Questions:

-What is historical thinking?

-Was American expansion overseas justified?
-Did the press cause the Spanish-American War?
-Was the acquisition of the Panama Canal Zone an act of justifiable imperialism?
-Does the need for self-defense give the US the right to interfere in the affairs of Latin America? (Think about the Roosevelt Corollary, "Dollar Diplomacy," and "Watchful Waiting")

1. Your SOAPS analysis form is due today on the Spanish-American War Primary Sources.

2. Let's discuss the reading from yesterday on the Monthly Review's article titled "'Kipling's "White Man's Burden," and the U.S. Imperialism"' and answer the following:
     A. Is this article credible?
     B. How does the author's relate Rudyard Kipling's "White Man's Burden" and 21st Century U.S. Imperialism?
     C. Do you think America is currently guilty of imperialism?

3. Introducing the Age of American Imperialism in the 20th Century -
 We will review and discuss the readings and questions of Pages 1, 2, and 3 on "What to do with Hawaii?", "The Independence of Cuba", and "Yellow Journalism" (highlights from the causes of the war) on the Hawaii and Spanish-American War Packet.

Essential Questions:

2. How do people create permanent change in a global world?

Themes: World Peace, War vs. Peace, Sustainable Change, Non-Government Organizations

1. What is Peace Day? Do you think Peace Day is sustainable?

2. Please hand in the Day After Peace Test.

3. Peace Day Awareness Campaign at Burlington High School - Should be implemented by Friday, so let's BRAINSTORM SOME IDEAS.

Homework:
1. Continue your BRAIN-STORMING session on Peace-Day.  Peace day is only 5 days away, WHAT WILL YOU DO to help BHS students become aware of Peace Day?  Brainstorm ideas, create meaningful activities/awareness, and implement it at this school using this Google Doc. We will share your brainstorm ideas in class tomorrow. Implementation should happen by Friday!
