1. Using the The Sedition Act Excerpt and The Historical Minute: The Senate Holds an Editor in Contempt on the website of the U.S. Senate, which tell the story of the Senate trial of William Duane. the class will be split up into three groups and discuss:
A. Group 1 - Could the Federalists, the party in control, wield the power necessary to protect America against those who opposed it without wielding that power against those who opposed them?
B. Group 2 - In times of war or imminent danger, how do you balance the need for security with the rights of individuals.
C. Group 3 - How can partisan politics affect the process of shaping security policies?
