Day 154 - Wednesday

U.S. History I - Periods 1, 2 & 7: 
Essential Questions:
-Were the forces of nationalism or sectionalism impacting the country the most from 1820-1860? 
-Does state or federal government have a greater impact in our lives?
-Was slavery a humane or evil institution?
-Does war cause national prosperity?

Themes: Solomon Northup, The Fugitive Slave Acts, State Rights vs. Federal Government, Clay's Compromise of 1850 (terms), Popular Sovereignty, Calhoun Goals/Webster's Goals, response to the compromise, Stephen Douglas and Millard Fillmore's views on slavery, expansion of slavery, Anti-Slavery Legislation, Bleeding Kansas, Unsung Heroes for Abolitionist, Causes of the American Civil War

1. We will read and analyze "How did Southerners DEFEND slavery?" in small groups. What arguments did they use and be specific about argument/document used?

2. Please review the rest of the Antebellum South Slideshow on your own and be familiar with the major aspects of Chapter 10 - Section 1 - The Divisive Politics of Slavery with a focus on The Wilmot Proviso, Secession, The Compromise of 1850, and Popular Sovereignty.

3. Please watch King Cotton and fashion of the 1860's

U.S. HISTORY II - Period 3:
Essential Questions:
-Who is responsible for starting the Cold War?
-Why didn't the Cold War ever turn "hot"?
-How did the Cold War challenge American values, at home and abroad?
-Is the Cold War still going on? How?
-What is JFK's real legacy?
-How did JFK's assassination impact Johnson's presidency?
-Why was the Vietnam War so divisive? 


Themes: The Vietnam War beginning, President Kennedy's legacy and assassination

1. I am leaving this up for another day, just in case you did not get the content and lesson on John F. Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis & Cuban Missile Crisis  - Students will look at Photographs + listen to Audio files for 20 minutes


Students should be able to answer the following questions/concerns:
-Why did the Soviet Union place missiles in Cuba? What could they gain by deployment?
-Why was Fidel Castro and Cuba a threat to the United States?
-Did missiles actually threaten the United State's security?
-Why did the U.S.A blockade Cuba? Was it an effective measure to problem solve this situation?
-How did the secret discussion affect the outcome?
-Should President Kennedy be considered a hero or lucky?  Why?
-What did the international community (United States/Soviet Union/Cuba/Others) gain or lose from this crisis?

2. We will have a quick conversation and you will have the day to prepare for the JFK Assassination DEBATE - ALL students NEED Contentions, Evidence, and Analysis in order to be successfully completed. The debate question is "Was JFK assassinated by a single gunman?"

International Studies - Period 4
Essential Questions:
1. Does the world need NATO? Why or why not?
2.  Does NATO have a new role in the order of international relations in Europe and the World in the    21st Century?
3. Was NATO just or unjust in participating and executing their mission in your post-Cold War scenario?
4. Why do states/countries follow the rules and principles of international law most of the time?
5. What does "hard power" and "soft power" capability and how does it impact foreign policy?

Themes: International Policy, NATO Missions

1. You will have the day to prepare for your NATO project, which is due on Thursday, May 18th for presentations.

2. You MUST have the following in your NATO Google Project Folder:
-You must have a basic outline in your Google Folder
A works cited page that is ongoing and will be finalized up to Chicago-Style Format standards
-Your final project (with a final link so that we can click on it and it will take us to your project (Prezi, Google Slides, You tube channels, and Digital Stories all have links!!!)

3. Your working outline should include the items below:
-Who is involved in your mission?
-How long have they been there?
-Why NATO troops are there?
-A DEBATABLE/CONTROVERSIAL thesis statement!
-Where and what did the situation look like that caused NATO troops to be engaged in the situation?
-What does the current situation look like? In other words, how effective was the NATO situation?
-What challenges did/do NATO troops face?
