U.S. History I - Periods 1, 2 & 7: 
Essential Questions:

-How do historical events, places, and people influence the perception of the world around us?
-What does it mean to be an American?

Themes: American ideals, Geography of North America, Colonization, Power

1. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie author of Americanah, one of the New York Times 10 best sellers of 2013. How is your perception influenced by the world around you? 



2. Lunch Room Fight Activity and Lunchroom Fight Partner Activity

3. Pass out Blank Maps of U.S./North America for your homework tonight.

4. (Pushing this off to Thursday) Evaluating Sources - Please read the following scenarios and then write your response and justification as to which source you trust more and why?

5. In groups, you will share and discuss the outlines you created from the article The Americas to 1620 utilizing the main ideas and supporting details.

6. Primary Sources on Colonization and analyzing documents:
Jamestown, VA (1622)
California (1766)
Pirate Hunters (1696)

U.S. HISTORY II - Period 3:
Essential Questions:
-How do historical events, places, and people influence the perception of the world around us?
-What does it mean to be an American?

-Was American expansion overseas justified?
-Did the press cause the Spanish-American War?
-Was the acquisition of the Panama Canal Zone and act of justifiable imperialism?
-Does the need for self-defense give the US the right to interfere in the affairs of Latin America? (Think about the Roosevelt Corollary, "Dollar Diplomacy," and "Watchful Waiting")



Themes: American ideals, Power, Progressives/Muckrakers

1. What does it mean to be "American" Activity.

2. In groups, display and discuss your outlines on The Progressive Era to a New Era - America from 1900-1929 - An essay by Daniel Rodgers Professor of History at Princeton University. We will have a class discussion on each section briefly.

3. We will introduce the Progressive Era (1900-1920) utilizing a Class Progressive 
Slideshow (PLEASE download this).

4. We will watch the Start of the Progressive Era Video (only I can login to play it in class).

6. Chicago and the World's Fair at the turn of the nineteenth century: What did the Chicago Fair of 1893 illustrate about America at this time period?
